The act of handwashing - a simple yet effective method of preventing the spread of potentially harmful bacteria from insufficient hygiene practices. Tackling the spread of such bacteria can significantly reduce the rate of diarrheal illness in communities and mean less days missed from work or school and a better quality of life.

In the final week of the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) project in Kampung Teliduson, the Raleigh volunteers took on the task of running an awareness raising session for the children in the community all about handwashing at key times and how to stay well in the fight against germs.

Raleigh Borneo’s water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects aim to provide an increased access to reliable, clean and safe water, and improved sanitation facilities. We often forget that while the project is being undertaken, volunteers will experience the same limited access to water and sanitation for the time they are there. While it is a daily reality for many people living in rural communities in Sabah, for the short period of time the volunteers are on the project, this will be the first time they have experienced such conditions.

In recognition of World Water Day, volunteer Ben talks about his experience of volunteering within a community with limited access to water and sanitation.

It’s World Water Day – A day to focus on the importance of water. Limited access to safe water and poor hygiene practices affect millions, causing poor health and stopping people from attending school or work. Our vision is to put young people right at the heart of safe water, sanitation and good hygiene.

He returned to Kampung Rumantai to watch the participants currently on the programme pitch their business plans to a panel of judges. We caught up with Rexon to ask him how his business venture is progressing since starting it in January.

Raleigh Borneo has been working alongside communities and young people to inspire and create lasting change in the region of Sabah since 1987. In our 31 years of operation our projects have had a significant impact on communities, areas of forest requiring protecting and restoring, and young people from both Malaysia and the rest of the world.

Globally, women are unequally paid and underrepresented in business. In Sabah, the increase in living costs over recent years has meant women in communities are more likely to be required to earn an income to support their family. Raleigh Borneo has been running its sustainable alternative livelihood project since June 2017. The programme aims to equip people within communities with the knowledge and skills they need to start and maintain green businesses.

In recognition of International Women’s Day, we spoke with some of our female participants to find out about the effect they hope the programme will have on their lives.

It’s International Women’s Day – A day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women around the world! Raleigh Borneo is celebrating today by recognising the strength and achievements of women in the communities of Sabah, and progression towards gender equality as we work alongside them.
