It’s now time for the venturers to head off to a different project to develop their skills and continue to make an impact in Sabah, Borneo.
Our Alpha groups have also been joined by a new group of 7-week volunteers for Phases 2 and 3: Otto, Beth, Natalie, Douglas and Annefloor. They are busy getting to know their fellow venturers and settling into life in the jungle.
Here is the rundown of where they are off to:
Alpha 1: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Kampung Buruni
Alpha 1 is heading to Kampung Buruni to work on a community WASH project, aiming to improve access to water and spread health and hygiene awareness. Our Phase 1 group has worked hard in the village to complete asset mapping of the area and baseline surveys to track how the villagers live. They have also nearly completed a tandas, started work on the dam to improve water accessibility and run community WASH sessions within the local school. Alpha 1 have attended the local church, played badminton with the community and learnt how to make tapioca fritters. Phase 2 will continue this relationship building, building two further tandas and continuing work on the dam.
VM Nick is returning to Buruni alongside Karla. Farra (Logistics) and Florence (Comms Officer) will be joining the team for the first half of the phase followed by Tina, part of logistics team.
Alpha 2: Community Resilience in Kampung Kibinut
Alpha 2 is off to Kampung Kibinut to work on the community resilience project to construct a Community Learning Centre (CLC). Our Phase 1 group have completed both asset maps and baseline surveys. They have finished the foundations for the building and started work on the timber frame for the two-story building. The team have fully embraced life in the community by learning a cultural dance, sampling local food and attending the local Catholic church. The phase 2 team will continue with this exciting CLC build and relationship building within the community.
Gurpreet, the returning VM, will continue to be at Kibinut for all three phases. She will be joined by Ella and Laura both fresh from different parts of the jungle!
Alpha 3: Natural Resource Management in Coupe 8
Alpha 3 is off to Coupe 8 deep within the Bornean jungle. Our Phase 1 group have been busy surveying the flora and fauna, going frogging in the evenings and putting out mist nets each day in Coupe 12 to determine its ‘high conservation value’. Phase 2 will continue this work in Coupe 8, as well as enjoying karaoke with the rangers and the wildlife in the surrounding forest! They’ll be hoping to steer clear of tiger leeches, though.
Alpha 3 will be supported by Emma and James, venturing out into the jungle from his position as Phase 1 Fieldbase medic. Larysa our photographer is joining them for the first half of the phase, hoping to capture lots of amazing wildlife.
Alpha 4: Adventure Leadership Trek in the Crocker Range
Alpha 4 is our trek group, heading to the Crocker Range for a 16-day, 80km trek through the jungle. By no means an easy feat, the venturers will gain leadership skills with the opportunity to lead their team to a new camp as a ‘day leader’. During Phase 1, our trek group experienced a lot of rain, some amazing views and learned jungle crafts. Our Phase 2 group will also experience everything the jungle has to throw at them.
They’ll be joined by their expert guides and supported by VMs Rebecca and Nick.
