Teaching schoolchildren about germs

13th December 2017

Alpha 1 have spent time working on the tandas and gravity fed water system to give people access to clean and safe water. Alongside this, part of their role there is to educate the villagers about good hygiene practices. Have a read about what their session at the local primary school:

We spent the majority of our time in Kampung Buruni building a tandas and working on the gravity fed water system. However, we also made time to present a WASH session to children at the local school on the importance of hand washing.

The planning took place over several afternoons in which we created a small play and an interactive demonstration. Our art skills were in full flare, as we created posters and cardboard cutouts and coloured in with as many colours as possible!

Fedde and Doug took the lead roles in our play as two school boys, with Neil, Sumi and Bobbie pretending to be evil germs. We demonstrated how germs could be passed from person to person and how they could be eliminated. The school children squealed and shrieked with laughter as we thudded across the stage! Our Malay speaker Rachel ensured that the children understood the message of our play, whilst we provided the entertainment factor!

For our interactive demonstration, we beckoned 4 volunteers to the front. We all placed our hands in a bowl of flour before completing a series of actions that would best remove the flour that visually symbolised the microscopic bacteria on our hands. The team held their hands high in the air, whilst puffs of flour fell onto their faces, as we showed the four actions: best friends, circles, cutie nails and snake. The rest of the Alpha branded huge posters that demonstrated these moves for further reinforcement.

Overall, we believe that the children had a fun and informative session with us and our photographer Ellie managed to get some great pictures as she snapped the session!
