Since 1987, Raleigh Borneo has partnered with young people from Malaysia and across the globe to make meaningful and lasting positive change in Sabah. In October 2018, we will be bringing our Expedition operations to a close after over three decades.
During our time in Sabah, we have been supported by many communities, project partners, funders and champions of our cause. We want to share this momentous occasion with the people who made this possible; our supporters, our alumni, our past and present project partners, and of course our volunteers.
We invite you to join us over the weekend as we reflect on the progress made since 1987, celebrate the achievements of our final Expedition, and formally launch the Raleigh Borneo Legacy work with our Malaysian National Societies.
Although many of our alumni are scattered across the globe, we want to share the evening with you. We will be posting all of the key moments from the event across all of our social media channels so you can celebrate alongside us here in Borneo.
Here’s what you can expect…
The celebration will be commencing with an exhibition chronicling the past 31 years in Sabah curated by our Expedition Photographer Daniel Buttifant. The exhibition will illustrate the journey of a Raleigh Borneo volunteer and the organisation itself over the past three decades by showcasing the photographic work of many of our past Expedition Photographers and volunteers.
Following the exhibition, an evening of food, dancing, speeches and celebrations of Raleigh Borneo’s work will commence, kindly hosted by the Ministry of Youth and Sport Sabah.
We are excited to announce our guest of honour is Dato Tengku Adlin. Instrumental in the Raleigh Borneo story, he first invited Raleigh to run Expeditions in Borneo in 1987 and has since been a crucial supporter in our work and many projects over the past three decades.
Additional guests attending the evening include our past and present project partners and supporting organisations, our team of trek guides, the Raleigh Malaysia Societies, alumni from Raleigh’s Head Office, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Sabah, the British Honorary Consul, Government Departments, and many more.
During the ceremony, alongside Dato Tengku Adlin, we will be having speeches from Dr. Brandon Charleston, Head of Countries at Raleigh International and former Raleigh Borneo Country Director, YB Poon Ming Fung, Minister for Youth and Sport Sabah, and two of our current Expedition volunteers, international volunteer Malcom and host country volunteer Dana.
To close the ceremony, Dr. Brandon Charleston will officially hand over the Legacy Charter to the Raleigh Malaysia to mark the official beginning of Raleigh’s Legacy work in Malaysia.
We look forward to sharing this momentous occasion with you!
